Is There A True Right or Wrong?

Prompt: Right or Wrong?

Who officially decides what is right and what is wrong? Is it simply led back to the Ten Commandments or is it what you are taught as you grow up? Many people have completely opposite ideas on the matter. For instance, while in one culture it clearly states that, "Thou shall not kill", which is known as moral absolutism, in others it is okay in certain situations, also known as moral relativism.

In my own opinion, when it comes to killing another person I am more of a moral relativist. This of course does not mean that I think you should go out and shoot your neighbor because they made you upset, but in today's society you may find yourself in a situation where you have no other choice. Some people have absolutely no moral standard of right and wrong, if for some reason your life is in danger because someone is physically trying to harm you then you may have no other choice but to protect yourself. Another situation would be a soldier in war. Of course war is never a good option, sadly, however, it may be the only option. In order for your country to be safe, sometimes drastic measures are necessary.

Adultery is another factor that comes into this situation. While in one culture you have one husband or one wife you are supposed to be with "until death do you part", there are others where it is okay for a man to have relations with multiple women. There are several different definitions of adultery, however, staying on the specifics of a man or woman, still married, having relations with another, I personally feel more on the side of moral absolutism. Once again, today's society has changed the factors a little. Now divorce is becoming more and more popular, which chances things. I do not think that by any means you should cheat on a spouse, which is where I feel that moral absolutism comes into play, however, in the instance of a divorce, I feel it is okay to move on and find someone else, bringing moral relativism back into play.

It is easy to have your own opinions on specific subject matters and more than likely views may shift back and forth on whether or not you are a radical absolutist or relativist. Personally, I do the same and see myself taking both sides, depending on the situation.

Pass. I truly enjoyed reading your entry. However, there were specific topics in your blog that I feel you could have elaborated on more. You mentioned many example, but never went into detail. Overall it was well written. There were a few grammatical errors, but it was enjoyable, easily read, and easily understood.

Pass: You stuck to your choice of the argument. Be careful with the actual flow of your writing. Try not to jump around from topic to topic in a single paragraph.
